同光三年(925)后唐灭前蜀，以孟知祥(874～934)为西川节度使。次年正月，孟知祥入

成都，整顿吏治，减少苛税，境内渐安。长兴三年(932)，知祥杀东川节度使董璋，得东川地。四年，封为蜀王。后唐闵帝应顺元年 (934)知祥称帝，年号明德，国号蜀，史称后蜀。同年，孟知祥死，子孟昶(919～965年)继位，仍用明德年号，明德五年(938)改元广政。
契丹灭后晋时，秦（今甘肃秦安北）、成（今甘肃成县）、阶（今甘肃武都东）三州附后蜀。后蜀又攻取凤州（今陕西凤县东），疆士遂与前蜀相同。广政十八年（后周显德二年955年），秦、阶、成、凤四州又为后周攻占。北宋乾德三年(965)发兵攻蜀，孟昶降，后蜀亡。同年，孟昶卒。
