I think Moon Wang did a good job interpreting the fight of love and hatred inside of Han Mama. The intertwining levels of emotion is hard to exhibit. Han Mama was humiliated by the betrayal of her husband’s having an affair with her son’s live-in girl friend. Her strong hatred toward them is understandable. She may not want to forgive, for doing so shows she is “weak” and she will lose face/dignity. However, her insistence on hatred is eating her alive, just like Yilie was experiencing. She finally learned that to forgive is to “give”.
